consider what your students might need in a few months, or even next year.
Office supply stores’ back to school discounts are only offered once a year, $0.10 folders, $1 crayons and the like - you might as well take advantage and stock up. Your children may need one box of crayons in September but you know that crayons will break or get lost. Purchase a few more boxes of crayons to have on hand for the entire school year and beyond.
For the most part, school supplies do not expire. A pencil will still be good today, tomorrow and even in 5 years. The same goes for paper, glue (if properly closed), markers, scissors, and erasers. Become a school supply hoarder.
Having the extra school supplies on hand will save you money. Gone will be the days of running to the store for a science project to get construction paper and markers. If the supplies are purchased at the start or close to the beginning of the year, especially when the best discounts are available, you will more than likely have most of the supplies already at hand. You won’t feel the need to cringe when you see the full retail price of a box of crayons, when you know that just a few weeks before you bought them at a 90% discount. Plus, you will lessen the chances of buying another unneeded thing during an emergency visit to the store.
Keep the stockpile handy, but not too accessible. There is no reason to open the next box of crayons if the first isn’t already used up. You want to have the stockpile set for when it is truly needed. Just because there are new markers doesn’t mean you need to use them. Out of sight, out of mind.
Best Supplies to Stockpile - Grab your circular and coupons and head out to the store to purchase these items that do not expire:
- Liquid glue (not glue sticks)
- Scissors (remember your kids won’t always be little so buy different sizes)
- Construction paper
- Plain paper
- Writing paper
- Composition notebooks - consider the line size and the age of your children
There are certainly more items, like an electric pencil sharpener, that can be costly if not purchased at a discount. Buy just one replacement of that supply. Hopefully you won’t go through more than 1 or 2 a school year. Planning ahead and taking advantage of the deepest discounts now that they are available is your best strategy for a less costly and more successful new school year. Happy shopping!
